Is it really so hard to see someone from the Middle East being an atheist?

environment canada issues : Here in Canada, whenever I meet people and let them know I’m from Middle East they just assume that I’m a Muslim.
And then are very surprised to find I don’t practice Islam or the fact that I drink alcohol or eat pork.
The impression I get mostly is that they think that people from Middle East are supposed to be closed minded and do anything they are told from their environment,
That just pisses me off,
Can’t they see that a person from that region can study and think and choose for himself?

There are a lot of narrow minded people out there. A lot of believers can’t even accept the reality of non-belief period.

Mike – you’ve never met ME! I don’t know that much about the sterotypical Middle Easterner, so I’d never assume ANYTHING about you! Maybe you aren’t in Toronto. It’s mega-multicultural here.

Well if you converted to anything other than Islam, in say, Afghanistan, all the mullahs would issue fatwahs calling for you to be stoned. So naturally we would think you’d all stay muslim to stay alive. But, hey, its cool you aren’t. I’ll keep this in mind. :)
