How can I become a teacher for special education?

special education issues : I am about to go to college but don’t know what to major in… I want to be a teacher for special education kids from ages 4-14 that have down syndrome and other types of disorders. This is something i really want to do for a career but don’t know what steps i need to take to reach my goal.

Please help by telling me steps to take, majors, and anything else that can be helpful. Thank you

Talk to someone who is currently certified to teach special education. Contact your states Department of Education to determine certification qualifications for special education teachers.

Visit the websites of the colleges/universities you are interested in attending to find out if they offer spec. ed. as a field of study, or call them. You will need courses covering IEPs, class room management, etc. BYU has a great program that you can look at:

You’ll still have to click on different links, but this may help you see what you will most likely need to take.
