Health Care profession career advice?

environment canada issues : My daughter is starting grade 12 (in Canada) and would like to work in the health profession/hospital/clinic environment. She is not good with blood, needles and broken bones and doesn’t want to work in a lab. She has been thinking about becoming a physio therapist, but is not at all certain. I was thinking along the lines of Respiratory Therapist or something along the lines of providing therapy of some sort.

Any advice for my girl?

Most resp. therapists I know love their jobs, so it seems to be a good choice. In the US, you can usually go to the nearest school that offers the program you want and ask to do a professional tour… they will let her spend a day on the job at one of their clinical locations so she can see the work first-hand. I highly suggest this. Also keep in mind the career outlook and expected salary. Best of luck!

Well if she has a weak stomach, respiratory therapy isn’t probably the best choice; a lot of suctioning of nasty, occasionally blood tinged liquid and phlegm. I am not an RT, but a nurse, and that is one thing I really can’t stand the sound of, it’s gross. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are great but require a great deal of education. Often times community college offer two year physical and occupational therapy assistant programs. There are some science related jobs that aren’t necessarily based in a lab, if that is her interest, such as genetic counseling and late stage human trial clinical pharmaceutical research. Other health care helping professions that allow you to work directly with people but doesn’t require patient care: public health, social work, health care administration, medical billing, etc.
