Changing my major to undecided?

discovery education issues : I’m currently in my second semester of my freshman year of college. I chose athletic training (pre-doctor of physical therapy) as my major during my senior year of high school. I applied, and got accepted direct entry to the doctor of physical therapy program. I’m a good student, I had a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale in high school and I learn fairly easily. But in college, I’m struggling to make Cs and Bs in the classes for my major. In my general education requirements, I’m making all A’s. I know that college is much harder than high school, but besides being too hard I’m just not interested in my classes for my major anymore. I used to look forward to attending them, but now I dread going to them and even studying for them, which is not helping my grades at all.

I really want to change my major. I hate science and I am terrible at it, and physical therapy is a lotttt of science classes. I thought physical therapy was what I wanted to do, but I’m about 95% sure that it’s not what I want. It’s a great profession, but I just don’t think it would be worth 6 more years of college and being absolutely miserable. Plus I’m simply not good at it. Looking back, I mostly just chose that major in high school to say that I had a major, and physical therapy worked well because it makes great money and I can still be involved in sports by helping athletes.

I know that I do not want to be an athletic trainer anymore. I admire everyone in the profession, but I just do not have the stomach to “drill toenails”, clean up blood, ect. So I am going to change my major for the fall semester, and it probably will be out of physical therapy too.

I guess after all of this rambling (sorry, I needed to vent!) my question is: Is changing my major to undecided for my sophomore year a bad idea? I’d like to take a semester to really figure out what I want to do. My university is great with undecided majors. I have already spoken with career services, and they were a huge help, but of course they did not tell me what I should major in, just gave me possibilites. There is even a “Major Discovery” class for undeclared majors. I would take that class, some general education classes, and possibly an 100-level Education class and Business class (these are the only two other majors that I am interested in at this point)

Also, I have a LOT of teachers in my family, and as a result I refused to think about even the possibility of being a teacher. But now, I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I’m very good at english, so I’ve been thinking about teaching high school english and hopefully coaching a little. But I’m not an outgoing person. I’m not painfully shy, but it usually takes a while for me to warm up to people and really be myself around them. Many people that I have talked to say that through student teaching and such, you really come out of your shell. But every person is different. If you have any thoughts/advice on this, that would be great!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who reads all of this. I know it is very long and I apologize. I needed to get that all out of my system I think. An even bigger thank you to anyone with advice! :)

I dont think changing your major to undecided will help in any way, you are just delaying the the issue. Sit down and assess your strengths and weaknesses. talk to people from professions you are interested into. I wanted to be a pharmacist at some point and I did most pharmacists from Publix, Kroger, Rite Aid and like to figure out if it was right for me and it turned out it wasn’t. Use the internet and figure out what are the pros and cons of each profession you are interested into. Youtube is pretty helpful. Finally, you gain some more time you can totally switch to undecided if and only if you are not done yet with your general education classes or electives.
best of luck to you
