Ask: Florida teacher continuing education?
continuing education issues : I will graduate in 2010 with a dual certification to teach elementary education and special education in Maryland. However, I am looking to move to Florida either immediately, or within a few years of graduation. In Maryland, you must get your Masters by your tenth year of teaching in the school system.
What are the continuing education requirements in Florida? Do you have to obtain additional course work? If so, what and how long do you have to obtain it?

You of course, need to contact Florida certifications in Tallahassee to get the specifics. Otherwise, as requirements change, you will get to Florida and find you are in trouble.
But, generally, 5 years is the number you are asking for. Continuting contracts require education courses, but most can be obtained through district “seminars” etc. – that’s how a lot of people keep their points up to date.
It takes three years to get a continuing contract (tenure) however, so you really have 8 years when you begin, and every 5 years after that.
Hope this helps.
