The future state of a population is dynamically connected to the legacy created and cycling amongst its people. A poor legacy could alone lead to the devastation and annihilation of a society. Prior to the era of European contact, Canada was populated by a diverse range of Aboriginal peoples who lived nomadic or settled lifestyles depending on the environment. They had developed nations with a total population of around 350 000 of people. Upon the arrival of European settlers, indigenous traditions were altered or even eliminated, ultimately causing a disintegration in the Aboriginal culture. The first interactions that took place between the Aboriginal peoples and the Europeans, built the pathway towards the oppression, acculturation, and the physical and mental destruction that followed.

The dispossession of Aboriginal lands, the attempted assimilation, and the cycle of social, physical, and spiritual dependancy has had violent effects on the Aboriginal population. These effects are visible today through the high level of poverty and poor health that is commonly seen within Aboriginal communities. The primitive cause of this problem is the loss of identity and heritage as a result of the forced assimilation of the natives into a European society. These effects have worked together to create legacy in the Aboriginal population which still echoes throughout the present day society. Canada’s First Nations people value a series of oral tradition that provides an account of each group’s origins and history.

A large part of the history of this native civilization has been lost as most historical writings about Aboriginal peoples were done by private British citizens who had paternalistic views on the people. This causes a distortion in our present day view of the Aboriginal culture and history. The absence of a central government within Aboriginals confused the Europeans into making inaccurate judgement about the nature of the Aboriginal peoples. By not comprehending the true history of the Aboriginal peoples, we are unable to correctly confront Aboriginal issues present today. The roots of many of the predicaments regarding the First Nations are unknown; however, the economic marginalization of the Aboriginal peoples, and the efforts of the Christian churches to remake natives culturally, while controlling them politically can be blamed for the thwart of their culture into the background of mainstream society.
